2 million gallons, the top water level being 255, and a

branch pipe 15 inches in diameter feeds the Pipem Hill Service

Reservoir holding l† million gallons, the top water level

being 275, and this reservoir can also be fed with high level

water.

84. Service reservoirs near the areas supplied perform

a valuable function in maintaining pressure in the mains,

filling up during the night when the demand for water is low

and feeding into the mains when the pressure drops during the

hours of maximum demand.

85.

Unfortunately the sites where such reservoirs can

be placed are very limited in Kowloon, and it is therefore

important that suitable sites be selected without undue delay

and reserved for that purpose.

86.

Pumping Station No. 2.

Considerable development of areas which can only be

supplied with high level water is probable in the future,

especially as the Island must look to the Mainland high level

sources to meet the growth of demand in the future.

87. The scheme therefore provides for the installation

of electrically operated pumps taking water from the proposed

20-million gallon service reservoir and boosting the pressure

so as to discharge into the Shek-þai-pui covered service

reservoir, a lift of buteen 140 and 150 feet.

88. It is assumed in the estimate which has been prepared

that two pumps each capable of boosting 5 million gallons per

diem into this reservoir are installed in the first instance,

one being a standby, and that these pumps should be electrically

controlled by a float af the service reservoir so as to cut out

automatically when that reservoir is full and to come into

operation when the water level drops to a predetermined extent,

the average quantity pumped daily being 3.75 million gallons.
